Romanian director Cristian Mungiu has won the Palme d'Or at the 79th Cannes Film Festival for his Norway-set drama "Fjord," marking his second time receiving cinema's most prestigious award. Mungiu previously won the top prize in 2007 for his abortion drama "4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days," joining an elite group of just ten directors to have won the award twice. The film stars Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve as Romanian Evangelicals who relocate to Norway, only to have their children removed by child services following an incident involving spanking. Mungiu described the film as exploring political polarization, specifically what he called "left-wing fundamentalism." The festival, which concluded Saturday, was considered a subdued affair, with Hollywood's notable absence and a general struggle among selections to impress critics. The nine-member jury, led by Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook, considered a diverse array of films including Pawel Pawlikowski's black-and-white "Fatherland," Japanese auteur Ryusuke Hamaguchi's three-hour elder care opus "All of a Sudden," and Russian director Andrey Zvyagintsev's "Minotaur." Spanish filmmakers Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi also garnered late enthusiasm for their sprawling film "The Black Ball," about three gay men across generations. The grand prize went to Zvyagintsev's "Minotaur," while the jury prize was awarded to Valeska Grisebach's "Das geträumte Abenteuer." Best director honors were split between Pawlikowski and the Spanish duo for their respective works. Mungiu's latest victory extends an extraordinary streak for specialty distributor Neon, which has now been associated with the last seven Palme d'Or winners. Winning the award instantly elevates a film's international profile and often positions it as a strong contender for Oscar recognition. Honorary Palme d'Or recipient Barbra Streisand was unable to attend the ceremony due to a knee injury.
