68% Reject Trump Claim That U.S. Economy Is Booming, Poll Finds
Feb 27th 2026
A Reuters/Ipsos poll shows most Americans reject President Trump’s claim that the U.S. economy is "booming," with widespread concern about inflation and the cost of new tariff policies.
- 68% of Americans said the economy is not booming while 30% expressed confidence in current conditions.
- 82% of respondents disagreed that there is hardly any inflation and only 16% agreed.
- The Reuters/Ipsos survey polled 4,638 adults from Feb. 18 to Feb. 23 and has a margin of error of about two percentage points.
- A separate Washington Post/ABC News/Ipsos poll found 57% disapprove of Trump’s handling of the economy, 65% disapprove of his inflation approach, and 64% oppose his tariff agenda.
- Trump has imposed broad tariffs on imports and after a Supreme Court ruling that struck down most levies he announced a new 10% global tariff and signaled it could rise to 15%.
- Research and estimates say consumers bear most of the cost of tariffs: the Kiel Institute found U.S. consumers and importers pay 96% of tariffs, and the Tax Foundation estimates tariffs could cost the average U.S. household about $1,000 in 2025.
