Activists say Iran crackdown killed at least 6,126 people
A U.S.-based rights group reports 6,126 deaths and more than 41,800 arrests since nationwide protests began Dec 28, while Iran gives a far lower toll and a U.S. carrier group arrives in the region.
- U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency says at least 6,126 people were killed and over 41,800 arrested in the crackdown.
- The activists report the dead include 5,777 protesters, 214 government-affiliated forces, 86 children and 49 non-protesting civilians.
- Iran’s government reports a lower death toll of 3,117 and has labeled many others terrorists.
- The Associated Press says it cannot independently verify the activists’ figures because of a near-countrywide internet blackout and disrupted communications.
- The USS Abraham Lincoln carrier group has arrived in the Middle East, and some Iranian-backed militias including the Houthis and Kataib Hezbollah have signaled willingness to retaliate if Iran is attacked
