Amazon invests additional $5bn in Anthropic, up to $25bn total

Amazon has announced it will invest $5 billion in AI company Anthropic, with additional payments of up to $20 billion contingent on meeting certain commercial milestones. The tech giant also revealed Anthropic has committed to spending more than $100 billion on Amazon Web Services technologies over the next decade, significantly deepening their strategic partnership as both companies race to advance their positions in the competitive AI landscape. The investment builds on Amazon's previous commitments to Anthropic, which include $4 billion invested in 2023 and another $4 billion in 2024. Under the expanded agreement, Anthropic will continue utilizing Amazon's custom Trainium silicon chips for training and powering its AI models, while securing access to up to 5 gigawatts of current and future chip capacity. The partnership also integrates Anthropic's Claude AI platform directly into the AWS portal, allowing Amazon Web Services customers to access the technology without requiring separate credentials. Anthropic, which has been releasing a series of models focused on coding and design capabilities, is seeking to strengthen its competitive position against other AI startups. Amazon, meanwhile, is looking to attract more customers to its custom silicon designed specifically for AI training and inference workloads. Following the announcement, Amazon shares rose approximately 2.5 percent in extended trading. The deal represents one of the largest AI-related investments to date, underscoring the massive capital requirements and strategic importance of securing computing infrastructure in the ongoing AI arms race among major technology companies.
