Anthropic has raised $65 billion in a Series H funding round, valuing the AI startup at $965 billion post-money, making it the world's most valuable private AI company and surpassing rival OpenAI's $852 billion valuation from March. The funding will be used to expand computing capacity to meet growing demand for chatbot Claude, with Anthropic having previously struggled to meet demand in recent months, forcing it to institute usage limits during peak hours. The round was led by Altimeter Capital, Dragoneer, Greenoaks, and Sequoia Capital, with Coatue and ICONIQ as co-leads, while strategic infrastructure partners Micron, Samsung, and SK Hynix also joined the investment. Run-rate revenue reportedly crossed $1 billion earlier this month, according to the company's blog post, up from a $380 billion valuation in February after raising $30 billion. The new funding comes as both Anthropic and OpenAI are preparing for potential public listings, possibly as soon as this year, to acquire the computational resources necessary to power their services and train new models. Amazon, which has committed up to $25 billion in Anthropic on top of the $8 billion previously invested, will receive significant commitments from the AI startup, with Anthropic committing to spend more than $100 billion over the next 10 years on Amazon's cloud technologies. The Series H round includes $15 billion of previously committed investments from hyperscalers, including $5 billion from Amazon. Anthropic, founded in 2021, has positioned itself as a safety-focused AI company and has rapidly scaled to become one of the most valuable tech startups in history. The company has been investing heavily in infrastructure to support its AI models and meet enterprise customer demand, with the new capital injection aimed at accelerating development and deployment of its products. The latest funding round underscores continued investor appetite for AI companies despite the enormous costs associated with building and training advanced models, with Anthropic's ascent mirroring the broader AI boom that has seen tech giants and startups alike pour billions into the sector.
