At least 10 FBI agents who worked on Trump documents case fired
Feb 28th 2026
At least 10 agents who worked on the Mar-a-Lago classified documents probe were fired on Wednesday, drawing condemnation from an FBI staff advocacy group and adding to a pattern of personnel moves linked to investigations of President Trump.
- At least 10 FBI agents who participated in the Mar-a-Lago classified documents investigation were terminated on Wednesday.
- The probe was led by Special Counsel Jack Smith, who ran two post-2021 investigations into President Trump, including one on the 2020 election and one on classified records.
- Trump and two associates were indicted in 2023 in the classified documents matter.
- A 2024 Florida judge dismissed the case against Trump, finding Smith was unlawfully appointed, and a federal appeals court in Georgia this year dropped the last charges at the Justice Department's request.
- The FBI Agents Association said the firings weaken the bureau, undermine trust in leadership, and jeopardize recruitment efforts.
- Since Trump returned to the White House in January, the Justice Department and FBI have dismissed employees who worked on federal investigations of him.
- The BBC has contacted the FBI for comment.
