BMW unveils 2027 i3, the first all-electric 3 Series

Mar 18th 2026

BMW's 2027 i3 is the first fully electric 3 Series, built on the Neue Klasse platform with an 800 volt battery, strong powertrain specs, and production due in Munich this August.

  • Production of the Neue Klasse 2027 i3 sedan starts in Munich in August 2026.
  • The i3 uses an 800 volt battery with new cylindrical cells that are about 20 percent more energy dense by volume than BMW's previous prismatic cells.
  • BMW predicts up to 440 miles of range and DC fast charging up to 400 kW for the i3.
  • The launch i3 50 xDrive pairs an asynchronous front motor with an electrically excited synchronous rear motor for a combined 463 hp and 476 lb-ft of torque.
  • BMW says the 6th generation powertrain has 40 percent lower energy losses, is 10 percent lighter and 20 percent cheaper to make than its 5th generation units.
  • About 30 percent of the i3's materials are recycled and BMW expects the model can reach carbon parity with a comparable gasoline car in as little as one year.
  • Driving dynamics aim to match 3 Series heritage with near 50:50 weight distribution, battery low center of gravity, and regenerative braking that handles 95 percent of stops.
  • The i3 uses rewritten traction and stability control software, two levels of driver assist that comply with UN R79 and UN R171 rules, and an Alexa-powered onboard assistant.
