CAF appeal board strips Senegal of AFCON title and awards trophy to Morocco

Mar 17th 2026

An appeal board overturned the on-field result of the AFCON final, declaring Senegal to have forfeited and awarding a 3-0 default victory to host nation Morocco, with the dispute eligible for further appeal to CAS.

  • CAF appeals judges ruled Senegal forfeited the final and converted Senegal’s 1-0 extra time win into a 3-0 default win for Morocco.
  • The final took place in Rabat on Jan. 18 and was halted when Senegal left the field in protest for about 15 minutes after a penalty was awarded to Morocco.
  • Play resumed, Morocco’s Brahim Diaz missed the penalty and Senegal scored in extra time before the initial result stood.
  • An earlier disciplinary hearing fined both federations and imposed bans totaling more than $1 million while keeping the match result unchanged.
  • The case can be appealed further to the Court of Arbitration for Sport
