Cuba says ready for any potential US attack as island recovers from blackout

Mar 22nd 2026 · Cuba

Cuba warned it would mobilise if attacked as the island begins to recover from repeated nationwide blackouts amid an oil blockade that Havana says has halted foreign fuel deliveries.

  • Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Fernandez de Cossio said Cuba is prepared to mobilise in case of a US attack.
  • The latest nationwide blackout was the second in a week and third in March, and officials blamed an unexpected shutdown at the Nuevitas thermoelectric plant.
  • About 72,000 customers in Havana, including five hospitals, had power restored, a small share of the city’s roughly 2 million residents.
  • President Miguel Diaz-Canel said Cuba has not received oil from foreign suppliers for three months and the country produces about 40 percent of the fuel it needs.
  • The United States has cut oil supplies to Cuba and President Trump has threatened to take over the island, while US Southern Command said it was not rehearsing an invasion but would protect US assets and respond to migration.
