After two recounts, Andy Thomson edged out his closest rival by five votes to become Boca Raton's first Democratic mayor in over 30 years, while voters rejected a major downtown redevelopment proposal.

After two recounts Thomson won with 7,572 votes to Mike Liebelson's 7,567, a margin of five votes.
Thomson will be Boca Raton's first Democratic mayor in more than 30 years and is due to take office on March 31.
A ballot measure to allow a major downtown redevelopment tied to the Terra and Frisbie Group was defeated about three to one.
Voters cited affordability, housing access, and protection of public land as central issues in the race.
Democrats say the result is part of a broader trend of flipping formerly Republican seats ahead of the November midterms.
