EU gas storage at lowest seasonal level since 2022 as supplies tighten
Mar 18th 2026
Below-normal reserves, colder weather and reduced Russian pipeline deliveries have pushed EU gas storage to 43% capacity, lifting prices and increasing reliance on US LNG.
- EU gas storage stood at 43% of capacity on January 29, about 490 terawatt-hours, the lowest seasonal level since 2022, according to Gas Infrastructure Europe.
- The bloc is roughly 130 full-sized LNG cargoes short compared with last year.
- A cold snap and reduced Russian pipeline deliveries have accelerated withdrawals and tightened supplies.
- European gas prices hit a ten-month high as the Dutch TTF reached €42.60 per megawatt-hour, with US winter storms and growing reliance on American LNG pushing prices higher.
- New EU legislation requires member states to end all Russian energy deliveries by the end of 2027, increasing the bloc's exposure to alternative suppliers.
