A Paris court has convicted Sabri Essid in absentia of genocide and crimes against humanity after testimony and documents showed he bought, enslaved and raped Yazidi women during IS attacks beginning in 2014.

  • Sabri Essid was convicted in absentia by the Paris criminal court of genocide and crimes against humanity for actions against Yazidis.
  • The verdict relied on testimony from two Yazidi women who said they were bought, enslaved and repeatedly raped by Essid between 2014 and 2016.
  • Telegram transcripts presented at trial showed an IS "market for caliphate soldiers" where women and children were traded and assigned prices.
  • The Yazidi genocide began with the August 2014 Sinjar massacre, with an estimated 6,000 people enslaved and about 2,000 still missing.
  • French investigators said IS executed a plan to kill or force convert men and boys and to enslave women, girls and younger children.
  • Essid, presumed dead in 2018, was tried despite being absent and his wife has said he may still be alive.
  • Lawyers for the survivors described the verdict as the first conviction of a French ISIS member for genocide and crimes against humanity.
