M23 says a dawn drone strike in the Himbi district of Goma killed three people, including French Unicef worker Karine Buisset; the government has not commented and no claim of responsibility has been confirmed.
- Three people, including French Unicef worker Karine Buisset, were killed in a drone strike in the Himbi neighborhood of Goma at about 4am on Wednesday.
- M23 and its Congo River Alliance spokesperson Lawrence Kanyuka accused the DRC government of carrying out the attack, while the government has not commented and no one has claimed responsibility.
- French president Emmanuel Macron confirmed the Unicef worker's death and called for respect for humanitarian law and protection for aid personnel.
- Unicef said it was devastated and outraged by the killing and stressed that humanitarian workers must be protected.
- Social media images and investigators from the Centre for Information Resilience said the damage was consistent with an airstrike.
- Goma has been under M23 control since January 2025 after deadly fighting that killed up to 2,000 people, and M23 now controls large areas of eastern DRC and runs parallel administrations in territory it holds.
- Use of drones in the conflict is rising, with 31 drone and airstrikes recorded in the DRC last month, and both sides have carried out recent drone attacks amid international pressure and US sanctions related to M23 links with Rwanda.
