Gerry Adams denies IRA membership in London civil case over 1973 and 1996 bombings

Mar 17th 2026

The former Sinn Fein leader told London’s High Court he never belonged to the IRA as victims of three bombings seek a civil ruling that he was personally liable for attacks on the British mainland.

  • Adams told the High Court he was never involved in the IRA.
  • Three people injured in the 1973 Old Bailey bombing and two 1996 blasts in Manchester and London are suing Adams in a civil claim.
  • The claimants ask the court to find on the balance of probabilities that Adams was a senior IRA member and part of its Army Council.
  • Adams was Sinn Fein leader and a key negotiator of the 1998 Good Friday Agreement, and has long rejected allegations he was an IRA member.
  • In court he said he sometimes defended IRA actions as resistance but accepted the group committed 'dastardly things' he did not support.
  • The Troubles killed more than 3,600 people and included IRA attacks on the British mainland, but this case is a civil suit not a criminal prosecution.
