Google I/O 2026 officially kicks off on Tuesday, May 19, at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California, with the opening keynote beginning at 10 am Pacific time. The two-day developer conference, hosted by Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai, will be livestreamed on Google's website and YouTube, and this year's central theme centers on making Gemini synonymous with artificial intelligence across all Google platforms. Google has already previewed several major announcements ahead of the event. The company unveiled Android 17's transformation from an operating system into what it calls an "intelligence system," where Gemini will understand, anticipate, and take action for users. New features include Rambler, which uses AI to remove filler words during dictation; 3D emoji; Pause Point, a screen time feature that blocks distracting apps; and Create My Widget, allowing users to build custom home screen widgets with Gemini. However, access to the advanced Gemini Intelligence capabilities requires devices with 12GB of RAM and a qualified flagship chip, potentially excluding recent devices like the Pixel 9 series. Google also announced its Googlebook platform, a new line of AI-first laptops powered by Android technologies that differ from Chromebooks, with hardware partners including Acer, HP, Lenovo, Dell, and Asus set to release devices by year's end. Additional expectations for the conference include possible announcements around the next-generation Gemini model (potentially Gemini 4 or a 3.5/3.8 update), the next iteration of the Veo AI video generator, updates to Search and creative platforms like Google Labs' AI music tool Flow, and more details on the Android XR platform for smart glasses being developed with partners Samsung, Xreal, Gentle Monster, and Warby Parker. Google will likely address the upcoming Gemini-powered Google Home smart speaker, originally announced for spring 2026 release, and provide updates on Wear OS, Google TV, and ChromeOS. No new Pixel hardware is expected at the event, with the Pixel 11 series and Pixel Watch 5 not anticipated until August at the earliest.
