Ukrainian authorities are investigating a mass shooting in Kyiv's Holosíiv district on Saturday that killed six people and wounded at least 15 others, including a 12-year-old boy. Police identified the attacker as Dmitro Vasilchenkov, a 58-year-old military retiree born in Moscow, who first set fire to his apartment before opening fire on pedestrians with a registered weapon. After shooting at least five people on the street at close range without warning, he entered a supermarket, took hostages, and was ultimately killed during a police special forces operation after refusing to negotiate for 40 minutes. The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) classified the incident as a terrorist act, while Interior Minister Ihor Klimenko confirmed the shooter had a criminal record and owned a legally registered long weapon. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said authorities would analyze Vasilchenkov's electronic devices and communications to determine whether he acted alone or received orders from Russia. Unofficial reports cited by Ukrainian journalist Vitali Glagola suggested Vasilchenkov held pro-Russian views and had published anti-Semitic content on social media, though these claims remain unverified. The shooting is being treated as an unusually violent but not unprecedented occurrence during wartime Ukraine, where authorities regularly investigate similar incidents ranging from verified Russian sabotage operations to violent acts with no confirmed foreign involvement. Ukraine's Prosecutor General's office said special forces stormed the supermarket after negotiations failed, during which the attacker shot one of the hostages. One victim died in the hospital from injuries, raising the death toll to six.
