Mar 14th 2026

A Georgia prosecutor has dropped charges against an 18-year-old who was driving when a prank led to the death of beloved North Hall High teacher Jason Hughes, after the teacher’s family asked that the students not be prosecuted.

  • Prosecutors dropped the felony vehicular homicide charge against 18-year-old Jayden Ryan Wallace and dismissed misdemeanor charges against four other teens.
  • Coach and teacher Jason Hughes, 40, died on March 6 after slipping and falling into the street during a toilet-papering prank outside his home in Hall County, Georgia.
  • The students had toilet-papered Hughes's lawn around 11:40 pm and began leaving when Hughes came outside, and they stopped to render aid until emergency responders arrived.
  • Hughes's family urged authorities not to prosecute the students, saying they knew and loved them and did not want their lives ruined by additional consequences.
  • Wallace's lawyer called the death a tragic accident and said Wallace did not drive unsafely or improperly.
  • Wallace and his family said he considered Hughes a mentor and plans to honor his memory moving forward.
