Iran's cheap Shahed drones overwhelm defenses across the Middle East
Mar 6th 2026
Iran has fired thousands of cheap, pre-programmed kamikaze Shahed drones to overwhelm defenses and strike military and civilian targets across the Middle East, causing deaths, infrastructure damage, and costly interceptions.
- Iran has launched more than 2,000 low-cost kamikaze drones across the region in recent days, with the UAE reporting over 1,000 fired at its territory.
- The Shahed 136 is pre-programmed, flies low to evade radar, has a range up to 2,500 km, and costs an estimated $20,000 to $50,000 each.
- Attacks have hit US bases and allies, embassies, energy infrastructure, airports, luxury hotels, and densely populated cities.
- The deadliest strike so far struck a base in Kuwait and killed six US troops, and strikes forced closures at Saudi Arabia's Ras Tanura refinery and Qatar's LNG terminal.
- Most drones are being intercepted by missiles and other systems, but each interception is far more expensive than building the drone.
- The US has deployed its own low-cost Lucas drone in response, and US officials say Iranian drone launches have fallen dramatically since the first day of fighting.
