Leading opposition candidate Péter Magyar says reports that Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó shared confidential EU meeting details with Russia amount to treason and calls for an investigation, as the European Commission seeks clarifications and Budapest denies the allegations.
- The Washington Post reported that Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó allegedly gave live updates from closed EU meetings to Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov.
- Péter Magyar, leading the polls for the Tisza party, said the alleged disclosures would amount to treason and promised an immediate investigation if elected on 12 April.
- The European Commission has asked Hungary to provide clarifications and EU diplomats said they may restrict information circulation if the reports are confirmed.
- Viktor Orbán ordered an inquiry and pro-government outlets accused journalist Szabolcs Panyi of involvement in eavesdropping, which Panyi denies and says is a smear campaign.
- Reports also say Russian operatives proposed a staged assassination and disinformation networks are targeting Magyar, while Hungary recently blocked a €90bn EU loan for Ukraine.
