Ineos seeks return of Britannia after split with Ben Ainslie's team

Mar 22nd 2026 · United Kingdom

Sir Jim Ratcliffe's Ineos says it is taking legal action to secure the return of Britannia, the boat it says it paid £180m for, after a falling out with Sir Ben Ainslie's Athena Racing, which now operates as GB1 and disputes Ineos ownership.

  • Ineos says it has initiated legal steps to recover the America's Cup boat Britannia.
  • Ineos states it paid £180m for Britannia and that the vessel belongs to the company.
  • Athena Racing, rebranded as GB1 after private equity backing from Oakley Capital, says the boat has always been in its possession and will be used for AC38.
  • Ineos and Sir Ben Ainslie split at the start of last year after protracted settlement negotiations, and Ineos abandoned plans to challenge the 2027 America's Cup in April 2025.
  • Ineos alleges Athena caused a six month delay to settlement talks, while GB1 thanks Ineos for past support and disputes Ineos ownership claims.
