NATO Secretary General said the alliance could not confirm Israel’s claim that the projectiles were Iranian intercontinental ballistic missiles.
US media reported missiles were launched between Thursday night and Friday morning but said they failed to hit Diego Garcia.
If Iran were confirmed as the source, the attack would suggest missiles with more than 4,000 km range, a capability Tehran has previously said it does not seek to field.
Diego Garcia hosts a major US-UK military base of about 2,500 personnel and both the UK and US have so far been cautious in assigning responsibility.
