Iran's paramilitary Revolutionary Guard opened fire Wednesday on a container ship in the Strait of Hormuz, damaging the vessel in an unprovoked attack that further escalated tensions as planned ceasefire negotiations failed to materialize. The British military's United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center reported the attack occurred around 7:55 a.m., with the Guard gunboat firing without issuing any prior warning to the ship. No casualties or environmental damage were reported, and Iran did not immediately acknowledge the assault. The strike comes amid heightened hostilities between Tehran and Washington. The United States has seized an Iranian container ship after shooting it this past weekend and boarded an oil tanker associated with Iran's oil trade in the Indian Ocean. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump ordered a blockade of Iranian ports, prompting Iran to refuse peace talks until the blockade is lifted. A ceasefire has been in place between the two nations since April 8, though the relationship remains volatile following the outbreak of war between Iran, the United States, and Israel on February 28. In a separate development, Iran executed a man identified as Mehdi Farid on Tuesday, convicted of espionage links to Israel's Mossad spy agency, according to the judiciary's Mizan Online website. The execution adds to a series of recent hangings carried out against people authorities claim were connected to mass protests in January that they say were instigated by Israel, the United States, and opposition groups. Additionally, UK inflation rose to 3.3 percent in March, up from 3 percent in February, with economists noting the Iran conflict beginning to impact global prices.
