Iran names Ahmad Vahidi as IRGC commander as Argentina seeks his arrest over 1994 AMIA bombing

Mar 1st 2026

Iran has appointed Ahmad Vahidi as commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, a day after reports said Mohammad Pakpour was killed in strikes on Tehran, while Argentina continues to seek Vahidi's arrest over the 1994 AMIA bombing.

  • Ahmad Vahidi is a former interior and defense minister who previously led the IRGC Quds Force.
  • State reports say his appointment followed the assassination of Mohammad Pakpour during strikes on Tehran in Operation Roaring Lion.
  • Argentina and Israel attribute the July 18, 1994 AMIA Jewish center bombing to Iran and Hezbollah and say 85 people were killed.
  • Argentina formally requested Vahidi's arrest in 2024 over his alleged role in the AMIA attack while he was on an official foreign visit.
  • Iran denies responsibility for the 1994 bombing and has refused investigation access for several former senior officials.
