Mar 14th 2026
The German philosopher and sociologist Jürgen Habermas has died at 96, his publisher Suhrkamp said; his work on communication, democracy and European integration made him one of postwar Germany's most influential intellectuals.
- Died aged 96 in Starnberg near Munich, his publisher Suhrkamp announced.
- A central figure of the Frankfurt School, he was best known for the theory of communicative action and political consensus-building.
- His seven-decade career shaped debates on democracy, the public sphere and European integration.
- He retained influence across party lines and was widely cited by politicians and academics alike.
- Late-life interventions provoked controversy, including critiques of Merkel and Baerbock and a statement on the Israel Gaza war that drew condemnation from other philosophers.
- His book Things Needed to Get Better was published in December, and he is survived by two of his three children after the recent deaths of his wife and one daughter.
