Kalita Wave: A more forgiving pour-over brewer

Mar 13th 2026

The Kalita Wave’s flat-bottom, three-hole design and wavy filter deliver more even saturation and controlled flow, making reliable, sweeter pour-over coffee with less technique than cone drippers.

  • The Kalita Wave uses a flat-bottom filter and three small drain holes to slow and even out flow through the grounds.
  • Its wavy paper filter reduces contact with the dripper walls, helping preserve brewing temperature.
  • Compared with cone drippers like the V60 or Chemex, the Wave is more forgiving and often produces fuller-bodied, less acidic cups with less precise pouring and grind control.
  • Wave filters are proprietary and cost about 12 to 13 cents each.
  • Wave sizes are 155 and 185, with the 185 recommended for brews larger than about 335 ml.
  • Stainless steel Waves are durable but can clog if a wet filter sags, while newer ceramic designs improve filter support and use larger outlet holes to reduce clogs.
  • Kalita's Tsubame model is a higher-end stainless option with a no-clog design and heavier construction.
