Llanelli woman injured by pothole as Wales sees surge in road damage

Mar 16th 2026

A Llanelli woman was hospitalised after tripping on a pothole as drivers and councils warn that heavy rain and ageing surfaces have produced more road defects, prompting extra Welsh government funding and local repair programmes.

  • Sharon Williams, 41, fell after tripping on a pothole in Rhandirmwyn and received hospital checks including a CT scan and ECG.
  • The RAC says near constant rain has caused a sudden spike in potholes hidden by puddles.
  • Welsh government figures show 11,250 potholes were fixed between April 2025 and January 2026.
  • Cabinet Secretary Ken Skates says an additional £120 million was unlocked for councils over two years and £25 million was invested in the strategic road network.
  • Ceredigion and Carmarthenshire reported 1,668 and 1,592 potholes fixed respectively in that period.
  • Drivers and local tyre businesses report more tyre damage and higher repair bills, with at least one motorist paying about £200.
  • Councils say they are investing millions in resurfacing and that serious potholes are prioritised for quick repair.
