Macron: Russia's war is a "triple failure"

Feb 24th 2026

French president Emmanuel Macron says the invasion has failed militarily, economically and strategically and pledges continued support for Ukraine.

  • Macron said the war is a military, economic and strategic failure that has strengthened NATO and galvanised Europeans.
  • He said only about 1% of Ukrainian territory has been seized since the front line stabilised in November 2022 and that Ukraine recaptured some areas last month.
  • He said more than 1.2 million Russian soldiers have been wounded or killed, which he described as the highest Russian combat casualties since World War II.
  • He said Russia is recruiting people from Africa to send to the Ukrainian front often without prior training.
  • Macron pledged continued supply of equipment, ammunition, training, air defence and counter-drone support and maintenance for delivered equipment.
  • He warned that deploying Western troops to Ukraine now would escalate the conflict and risk losing control over the situation.
