Mali's Defense Minister Sadio Camara was killed along with his second wife and two grandchildren in a coordinated car bomb attack on his residence at the Kati military base outside the capital Bamako on Saturday, according to family and officials. The assault was carried out by the al-Qaeda-linked group Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) in joint operation with Tuareg separatist rebels from the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA), marking one of the most significant security escalations in the Sahel nation in recent years. The coordinated strikes targeted multiple locations including Bamako, Kati, Gao, Kidal, Mopti, and Sevare, with witnesses reporting explosions and sustained gunfire near Modibo Keita International Airport and key military installations. Fighting continued into Sunday, prompting authorities to impose a three-day overnight curfew in Bamako from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., while at least 16 people were injured including civilians and soldiers. The FLA claimed responsibility alongside JNIM and announced that separatist fighters had taken part in the operation "in partnership with the JNIM, which is also committed to defending the people against the military regime in Bamako." UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres condemned the attacks and called for an international response to terrorism in the region, while the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) also issued a condemnation and urged stronger regional cooperation. The attacks represent a worrying shift in the Sahel region's security landscape, as the coordination between jihadist groups and separatist movements potentially complicates counterinsurgency efforts in Mali and neighboring states. Mali's military junta, which came to power through coups in 2020 and 2021, has increasingly relied on Russian security assistance after reducing cooperation with Western partners, though the security situation has continued to deteriorate. The separatists also issued a statement urging Russia to reconsider its support for Mali's government, claiming foreign backing has worsened conditions for civilians. Analysts warn the alliance between JNIM and FLA signals a new phase of the insurgency, with the rebels also claiming control over parts of Kidal and Gao in northern Mali.
