Man Opens Fire at Teotihuacán Pyramid, Killing Canadian Tourist

A man opened fire from the top of the Pyramid of the Moon at the Teotihuacán archaeological site near Mexico City on Monday, killing a Canadian woman and injuring at least three others before committing suicide, according to Mexican authorities. Security forces were deployed to the area after shots were reported, and the injured are receiving medical attention. President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed condolences to the victims' families and stated that officials from the Ministry of the Interior and Ministry of Culture were heading to the site to provide support. The attack occurred midday at the northern end of the complex, with the assailant climbing the 43-meter pyramid before opening fire on tourists below. Authorities confirmed the attacker took his own life at the scene and recovered a firearm, a bladed weapon, and ammunition. Among the wounded, several suffered gunshot injuries while others were hurt fleeing the scene. An operation was coordinated with the State of Mexico Security Secretariat and the National Guard to secure the area and investigate the incident. Teotihuacán, one of Mexico's most visited archaeological sites and a major tourist attraction located about 25 miles northeast of Mexico City, draws thousands of visitors daily to its ancient pyramids and temples. Sheinbaum said in a post on social media that she is closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates through the Security Cabinet as details emerge.
