The housing department has shortlisted seven areas for further consultation as part of a programme to create a new generation of English towns, while six other proposals have been deprioritised; ministers aim to start work on three sites before the 2029 election but have not set a budget.
- Seven areas including Tempsford, Leeds South Bank, Manchester Victoria North, Thamesmead, Brabazon and West Innovation Arc, and Milton Keynes will go forward for further consultation.
- Six other proposed sites, including plans in Cheshire, Devon and Plymouth, have been deprioritised but remain credited as viable for other support.
- Ministers say building will begin on three sites before the next general election, which must be held by 2029.
- Each site is being assessed to deliver between 10,000 and 40,000 homes and will face further environmental review.
- The government will create delivery bodies with powers including compulsory purchase and plans to use existing affordable housing funds and a new investment agency, but a total budget has not been announced.
