Nova Scotia officials say an investigation into the October 2024 death of a 19-year-old worker at a Halifax Walmart bakery found the oven was functioning properly and no workplace safety violations were identified.
- A 19-year-old Walmart worker, identified by family as Gursimran Kaur, died inside a bakery oven on Oct. 19, 2024.
- The Department of Labour, Skills and Immigration says its safety branch conducted an extensive investigation and found no safety violations related to the oven or its operation.
- Investigators determined the oven was in proper working order and identified no broader safety concerns with that type of equipment.
- Halifax Regional Police previously said the death was not suspicious and that there was no evidence of foul play.
- A stop-work order for the bakery area and a piece of equipment was issued after the incident and was lifted on Oct. 28, 2024.
- Walmart replaced the oven, moved the bakery as part of a planned renovation, and the store reopened in early February, while the family says it remains devastated and seeks answers.
