Narges Mohammadi, the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize laureate who remains imprisoned in Iran, is fighting for her life after being hospitalized on May 1 in northwestern Iran, according to a support committee that described her condition as "between life and death." The prominent human rights activist suffered a suspected heart attack in late March and has been on a hunger strike to protest the conditions of her detention, her family reported. Her Paris-based lawyer Chirinne Ardakani addressed supporters at a news conference, stating, "We are not just fighting for the freedom of Narges, we are fighting so that her heart continues to beat." Mohammadi, now in her early 50s, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize while in detention for her advocacy work promoting women's rights and opposing the death penalty in Iran. She was imprisoned in December and has spent much of her recent years behind bars due to her activism against the Iranian government. The deteriorating state of her health has raised the worst fears among those close to her, with international attention intensifying as her condition worsens. The support committee and her legal team continue to advocate for her release and proper medical care.
