On 29 December 2011 Clifton Lewis, a Chicago police officer moonlighting as a minimart security guard, was shot several times and left dead.
Two men entered the store, shot Lewis, and fled with his gun and police star.
A week later police arrested four men with alleged ties to the Spanish Cobras gang.
During hours of intense police questioning the four men repeatedly denied committing the killing.
