One month after Iran crackdown, reported toll rises as repression deepens

Human rights groups report thousands killed or arrested since Jan 8-9 security assaults, with growing accounts of torture, sexual violence and forced confessions as authorities expand the crackdown.

  • HRANA reports over 6,400 killed and more than 51,500 arrested since Jan 8-9, with about 11,000 deaths under review, and these figures are not independently verified.
  • The Coordinating Council of Iranian Teachers Trade Associations published the names of 200 students it says were killed during the protests.
  • Human rights groups and former detainees report torture, sexual violence and dire conditions in custody, and wounded protesters often avoid hospitals for fear of arrest.
  • At least 331 forced confessions tied to the protests have been broadcast and state media has published coerced statements from detained figures.
  • Authorities have arrested reformist politicians, activists and journalists and seized properties of some supporters while international attention shifts toward U.S.-Iran nuclear talks.
