OpenAI invests S$300m to build first non-US AI lab in Singapore
The ChatGPT-maker will establish its first applied AI laboratory outside the US, growing its Singapore technical teams to over 200 roles. The investment marks the first memorandum of understanding between OpenAI and Singapore's government.

Singapore has secured a significant S$300 million (US$234 million) investment from OpenAI to develop the country's artificial intelligence ecosystem, marking the first memorandum of understanding between the Singapore government and the ChatGPT-maker. Under the "OpenAI for Singapore" initiative, the AI firm will establish its first applied AI laboratory outside the United States in Singapore, growing its technical teams to more than 200 roles over the coming years. The lab will support work aligned with Singapore's national priorities in public services, finance, healthcare, and digital infrastructure, with plans to expand the company's office footprint as the initiative grows. The partnership includes collaboration with Singapore's education sector through the OpenAI Academy, featuring hands-on workshops and Codex for Teachers hackathons, as well as participation in the AIxTech programme with IMDA and AI Singapore to build AI fluency among tech professionals. OpenAI will also launch a forward-deployed engineer programme to train mid-career software engineers in building real-world AI systems. Singapore is currently one of the top-three markets globally for per-capita ChatGPT adoption and ranks among the top five countries for Codex usage, making it a strategic regional hub for the company. Meanwhile, MP Singapore has partnered with IPI Singapore and DLG Exhibition and Events for AIMX Singapore 2026, scheduled for August 26-27, 2026, at the Sands Expo and Convention Centre, Marina Bay Sands. The event will converge three flagship platforms to deliver enterprise-driven technology matching and cross-border innovation networks, with IPI's TechInnovation providing advisory capabilities and DLG's AI Gravity showcasing China's rapidly advancing AI ecosystem. The organizers expect nearly 5,000 attendees and over 100 exhibitors to explore innovations in healthcare, logistics, robotics, retail, and supply chain sectors. In a separate development, Abu Dhabi's Emergencies, Crises and Disasters Management Centre is showcasing AI-powered platforms at the International Exhibition for National Security and Resilience 2026, highlighting the emirate's growing role in risk management and crisis response capabilities.
