Pakistan and Taliban announce Eid pause after deadly Kabul strike
Mar 18th 2026
Pakistan and Afghanistan's Taliban declared a temporary halt to cross border strikes for Eid after a deadly Kabul strike that Afghan authorities say killed hundreds, with both sides linking the pause to regional mediation requests.
- Pakistan will pause strikes in Afghanistan from midnight Wednesday until midnight Monday for Eid al Fitr.
- Islamabad said the pause followed requests from Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey and warned operations would resume if any cross border attacks occur.
- Afghanistan's Taliban government also declared a temporary suspension of military operations against Pakistan.
- The announcement came after a Pakistani strike on a Kabul drug treatment centre that Afghan authorities say killed around 400 people, a figure not independently verified.
- Recovery and identification of victims have been hampered by rubble, limited forensic capacity and conflicting reports from the scene.
- The UN has reported heavy civilian tolls and more than 115,000 families displaced in the wider fighting, while mediation efforts by Gulf countries, China and Russia have not yet produced a durable truce.
