Pooled analysis finds partnered women slightly more sexually satisfied than men

Feb 28th 2026

An integrative analysis of 37 studies with 7,520 participants finds a small but consistent advantage in sexual satisfaction for partnered women that persists after statistical controls and is stronger in longer relationships.

  • Researchers pooled data from 37 studies covering 7,520 partnered men and women.
  • On average, women reported slightly higher sexual satisfaction than men.
  • Men reported higher sexual arousal and greater sexual inhibition than women.
  • The gender difference held after controlling for relationship satisfaction and partner sexual satisfaction.
  • The gap was more apparent in longer term relationships, but the effect size was small.
  • Authors note social desirability could make women less likely to report sexual dissatisfaction.
