Public invited to vote on Sycamore Gap tree artwork commission

Mar 14th 2026

The National Trust is asking the public to choose which of six shortlisted artists should create an artwork from half the timber of the Sycamore Gap tree, with voting open until 28 March.

  • National Trust has shortlisted six proposals from artists and collectives across England to use half the timber from the felled Sycamore Gap tree.
  • Public voting will account for 30% of the final decision while an expert judging panel provides the other 70%.
  • Voting is open until 28 March and the winner will be announced later in the spring.
  • The wood has been seasoned for 28 months and the finished artwork is expected by 2028.
  • The tree was illegally cut down in September 2023 and two men, Daniel Graham and Adam Carruthers, were later jailed.
