Remove This Android VPN/IPTV App Now, Security Firm Says

Security researchers say a sideloaded Android app offering free VPN and IPTV is actually a Trojan called Klopatra that can steal banking data and control phones, and they urge users to remove it immediately.

  • The app Mobdro Pro IP TV Plus VPN, sometimes appearing as Modpro IP TV Plus VPN, is a Trojan disguised as a free IPTV and VPN client.
  • Cleafy identified the embedded malware as Klopatra.
  • Klopatra can access financial accounts and take remote control of infected Android devices.
  • The malware was first spotted in late August and had compromised thousands of devices by late September, mainly in Italy and Spain.
  • The app is not available on Google Play and is distributed by sideloading.
  • Google says Play Protect can warn users or block known versions of the malware
