Republican responses to mass shootings do not shift public support for gun reform

Mar 2nd 2026

New research in the Journal of Health Politics, Policy and Law reports that changing Republican rhetoric after mass shootings had no measurable impact on public support for six gun control measures, with majority backing for many reforms already present across the political spectrum.

  • A 2024 national randomized survey of 3,000 adults found no statistically significant effect of Republican messaging on support for six specific gun policies.
  • Researchers tested four conditions: condolences, blaming mental illness and criminals, endorsing red flag laws, and no political response.
  • Baseline support for reform was substantial, with 77 percent backing red flag laws and a majority backing most other measures.
  • Stability in opinions held across party lines, including among Republican respondents.
  • Authors say polarization and political incentives, not public opinion, help explain why elected officials resist passing federal gun reforms
