Russia launched a large-scale missile and drone attack on Kyiv and its surrounding region overnight Sunday, killing four people and injuring more than 60 others, Ukrainian authorities reported. The bombardment included approximately 600 drones and 90 missiles of various types, with Ukraine's air force claiming it destroyed or jammed 549 drones and 55 missiles during the attack. The assault began just after 1am local time, with Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirming two fatalities and 56 wounded in the capital alone, including two children among the hospitalized. Two additional deaths were reported in the Kyiv region, where nine others were injured. Damage was recorded at 40 locations across several districts of the capital, including residential buildings, shops, and the foyer of a metro station near Independence Square. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Russia deployed the Oreshnik hypersonic ballistic missile, which Moscow claims is nearly impossible to intercept due to its speed exceeding 10 times the speed of sound. The attack came as retaliation following Ukrainian strikes in Russian-occupied Luhansk that killed at least 18 people at a college dormitory. Russia had previously used the Oreshnik missile twice before, with President Vladimir Putin boasting about its capabilities.
