Russian Drone Crashes Into Romanian Apartment, Injuring Two

A Russian drone crashed into an apartment building in Galati, Romania, on Thursday night, injuring two people and triggering a fire that required the evacuation of approximately 70 residents, according to the Romanian General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations. The drone struck a 10th-floor apartment, and its entire explosive payload detonated before firefighters brought the blaze under control. The attack occurred as part of a broader Russian drone assault on Ukrainian targets near the Danube River border with Romania. Romania's defense ministry confirmed that the drone entered Romanian airspace during the night of May 28-29 and was tracked by radar before crashing onto the roof of the residential building. This marks the second time in recent months that Romanian airspace has been breached during Russian attacks on Ukraine. Last September, Romania reported a similar airspace violation and scrambled two F-16 fighter jets in response, while Poland simultaneously reported shooting down Russian drones in its own airspace. In a separate incident, Romanian authorities discovered an unexploded drone near Basesti in Maramures county, northwestern Romania, with a wingspan of approximately three meters, and investigators are working to determine its origin. Meanwhile, the nearby Izmail port in Ukraine's Odesa region, which sits across the Danube from Romania and serves as the largest Ukrainian river port, came under attack from multiple drones early Friday morning. Romania, a NATO member, has increasingly found itself affected by the spillover from the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
