London mayor Sadiq Khan told La Repubblica he wants Labour to fight the next general election on a promise to rejoin the EU, citing economic research and recent global instability, while the party leadership favors closer alignment rather than full reversal of Brexit.

Khan told La Repubblica Labour should commit to rejoining the EU, including the customs union, single market and full membership.
He said changed global conditions, citing President Trump’s tariffs and the Israel-related conflict affecting oil prices, make rejoining desirable.
Khan cited research from the National Institute of Economic and Social Research and Goldman Sachs that the UK economy would have been about 10% larger without Brexit.
The UK voted to leave the EU in 2016 and formally completed its exit in 2021.
The Labour government’s public position is to reset relations with the EU, with Chancellor Rachel Reeves urging closer alignment rather than reversing Brexit and saying Brexit may have reduced GDP by up to 8%.
