Sony Music Publishing has agreed to acquire Recognition Music Group's entire catalog of more than 45,000 songs from funds managed by Blackstone for approximately $4 billion, in one of the largest deals in music industry history. The acquisition, announced Monday, grants Sony access to works from prominent artists including Beyonce, Fleetwood Mac, Rihanna, Justin Bieber, and Neil Young, as well as iconic songs such as Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" and Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'." Financial terms were not officially disclosed by the companies. The deal was structured in partnership with an investment venture between Sony Music Group and Singapore's sovereign wealth fund GIC, announced earlier this year, aimed at acquiring and growing premium music catalogs across genres and global markets. Blackstone created Recognition Music Group after acquiring the British firm Hipgnosis Songs for $1.6 billion in 2024, under founder Merck Mercuriadis, who assembled an extensive catalog featuring artists like Red Hot Chili Peppers and Shakira through successive acquisitions that drove up industry prices. The acquisition reflects a broader trend in which record labels, publishers, and streaming platforms are racing to secure ownership of music rights amid strong, predictable revenue from streaming services. Media companies are increasingly seeking well-known songs to anchor films, documentaries, and television series as streaming services look to deep catalogs to bolster premium content offerings and drive subscriber growth. Rival platforms and rights holders including Warner Music Group, Spotify, and Amazon Music have similarly expanded their focus on music catalogs.
