Scuffles occurred between protesters and paramilitary Basij at Sharif while university guards at the University of Tehran did not intervene during a memorial protest.
The demonstrations follow a January crackdown that rights groups say killed thousands, with widely differing official and independent death tolls.
US forces, including the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford, are moving toward the Middle East as Washington and Tehran prepare indirect talks in Geneva.
