Taliban frees US linguist Dennis Coyle after year in custody

Afghan foreign ministry said the Supreme Court ordered the release of US national Dennis Coyle after a family appeal and UAE-mediated talks, and he was reunited with his family in Kabul.

- Coyle, 64, a long time linguist and researcher in Afghanistan, was reunited with his family in Kabul.
- His family said he had been held in near-solitary conditions with limited access to medical care.
- The United States placed Afghanistan on a list of countries engaged in wrongful detentions earlier in 2025, a designation Kabul called regrettable.
