Afghan foreign ministry said the Supreme Court ordered the release of US national Dennis Coyle after a family appeal and UAE-mediated talks, and he was reunited with his family in Kabul.

Taliban government announced the release of US national Dennis Coyle after more than a year in detention.
Coyle was arrested in January 2025, according to the Foley Foundation.
His family appealed to Afghanistan's supreme leader for an Eid release and the Supreme Court approved his release.
The UAE helped mediate the case and officials including Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi and former US envoy Zalmay Khalilzad met with a family member before the release.
Coyle, 64, a long time linguist and researcher in Afghanistan, was reunited with his family in Kabul.
His family said he had been held in near-solitary conditions with limited access to medical care.
The United States placed Afghanistan on a list of countries engaged in wrongful detentions earlier in 2025, a designation Kabul called regrettable.
