Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old teacher from Torrance, California, has been charged with attempted assassination of President Donald Trump following a shooting incident at the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner on Saturday evening in Washington. Allen appeared in federal court on Monday wearing a blue prison jumpsuit, where U.S. Magistrate Judge Matthew Sharbaugh ordered him detained pending further proceedings. During the chaotic attack, Allen allegedly fired a shotgun at a Secret Service agent at a checkpoint inside the Washington Hilton hotel before being tackled and arrested by security personnel. The agent was struck but survived after a tactical vest stopped the projectile. Federal prosecutors filed a three-count complaint against Allen, charging him with attempting to assassinate the president and firearms offenses. According to Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, Allen traveled by train from California to Chicago and then to Washington, where he booked a room at the hotel hosting the gala. Authorities say he was carrying a shotgun, a handgun, and three knives. prosecutors revealed that Allen sent a message to family members minutes before the attack in which he referred to himself as a "Friendly Federal Assassin," made repeated references to Trump without naming him directly, and discussed grievances related to the administration's actions. Investigators are examining this manifesto, along with social media posts and interviews with relatives, to determine the suspect's mental state and motivations. The shooting sent approximately 400 guests at the prestigious annual dinner, including journalists, politicians and senior administration officials, scrambling under tables while Trump, first lady Melania Trump and Vice President JD Vance were quickly evacuated from the ballroom. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt described the incident as the third major assassination attempt against Trump, noting he survived two attempts during his 2024 presidential campaign. Allen has no prior criminal record and authorities said he indicated during his court appearance that he would answer all questions truthfully and holds a master's degree in computer science. The next hearing regarding his continued detention is scheduled for Thursday.
