The U.S. State Department is moving forward with plans to issue a limited edition passport featuring the image of President Donald Trump on its inside cover, marking the first time a sitting American president's portrait would appear on such a document. According to reports confirmed by State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott, the commemorative passport will display Trump's official presidential portrait superimposed over the Declaration of Independence, along with his signature in gold and imagery of the American flag. The back cover will feature a gold American flag with 13 stars, referencing the 1777 version of the flag representing the original 13 colonies, and the number 250 in reference to the 250th anniversary of American independence. Only 25,000 copies of this special edition are expected to be produced, though it will carry the same validity and security features as standard passports. The passport redesign is part of a broader initiative tied to celebrations commemorating 250 years of American independence. This effort has also included the approval of a one-dollar coin bearing Trump's image, which was greenlit by a committee of presidential supporters in March. Both initiatives have drawn criticism from opposition leaders, with Democratic Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi calling the passport plan "absurd" and stating that such documents "represent the American people, not one man's megalomania." The coin proposal has faced particular legal scrutiny, as U.S. law generally prohibits commemorative coins for national anniversaries from carrying portraits of living individuals, though the administration has argued that the Treasury Secretary has authority to authorize new coin designs and emissions. The current U.S. passport design was introduced in 2021 and traditionally features key moments and symbols from American history, including imagery of Francis Scott Key observing the bombardment of Fort McHenry and quotes about freedom. Standard U.S. passports are issued in the name of the Secretary of State rather than the President. Trump's push to include his likeness on official documents extends beyond passports and coins, with his name and image appearing across various government-linked initiatives, including federal buildings displaying large banners and premium residency programs marketed under his name, such as the "Trump Gold Card" and "Trump Platinum Card."
