Uber to let women avoid male drivers and riders in US
Mar 9th 2026
Uber will roll out a 'Women Preferences' option that lets women riders and drivers request same-gender pairings, with a tradeoff of possible longer wait times and the ability to accept faster mixed-gender rides.
- Women riders will be able to select a 'Women Drivers' option when requesting a trip.
- Women drivers will be able to request women-only riders.
- Users who choose the women-only option may face longer wait times and can opt for faster mixed-gender rides instead.
- Uber says it tested and refined the feature in markets including Germany and France and first offered a women rider preference in 2019 during changes in Saudi Arabia.
- Uber plans a phased rollout starting with Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Detroit through the end of July and into August 2025 before expanding nationwide.
