UK net zero to 2050 cheaper than a single fossil fuel crisis, CCC finds

Mar 11th 2026

The government’s climate advisers say reaching net zero by 2050 is affordable and delivers larger economic, health and security benefits than the cost of a single recent oil and gas price shock.

  • The Climate Change Committee estimates net zero will cost about £4bn a year, around £100bn in total by 2050.
  • The CCC finds each pound invested in the transition returns between £2 and £4 in benefits.
  • Avoiding some climate impacts could be worth as much as £130bn by 2050.
  • Net zero would reduce reliance on volatile foreign fossil fuels and lower exposure to price shocks.
  • Health and other co-benefits could save the NHS and individuals an estimated £2bn to £8bn a year.
